A SWING KEY to stop hitting from the top
A simple key to start your downswing correctly
Hi, Robin here. Here’s a simple key or feeling for anybody who feels like they’re using their upper body too much in transition. You feel like you’re hitting at the ball in the transition. You’re hitting it from the top. Often, when we hit, our human instinct would be to hit this way, okay? That creates a steep movement, so people who have this fault, often maybe take big divots, are sleep on the ball, pass it then you create pull shots and slice shots.
You’ve really got to feel that there’s no hit in your transition. You’re taking your time. You’re letting your lower body lead. Your muscles are sort of switched off. You’re letting the club fall down before you add a little bit of speed. Even through the impact position, impact zone, try not to hit at the ball. Try to make a swing, and let the ball get in the way of the shot. As I said, it’s based on people who have got that urge to hit it from the top of the swing.
It can be sometimes difficult mentally to do this, but maybe before you hit the ball, close your eyes, feel there’s no hit at the ball at any time. You’re just letting your lower body move and swing through the impact zone. So I say, simple feeling or key for anybody who struggles with this. Give it a try the next time you’re out on the course.
