Putting – Hit the Sweet Spot
A drill to hit the centre of the putter face
HITTING THE SWEET SPOT or the centre of the putter face is something that is often overlooked. It is a very important factor in putting well.
Something players of all levels don’t work on enough when they’re practicing their putting is striking their put out of the center of the putter face. Off centered heads can do two things. First, let me give you an example. If an impact you would strike the ball out of the toe of the putter, the putter face will deflect open. Your putter path could be good, your putter face could be squared just before impact. But if you hit the toe, the putter face will open up the ball would start right of your intended target line. The opposite for a heal impact. The putter face would close, the ball would start left of your input and intended target line. Second thing is, if you’re not striking out of the center of the putter, the ball will come off the putter face a little slower than you expect, often coming up short to the hole. It will affect the speed of your put. Think about it. To make a put you need to do two things correctly. First of all, the correct line and second of all, the correct speed. So, if you’re not hitting the center of the putter face, what chance do you have? To develop this aspect of your putting, you can try this simple drill. One that has been around for a long time, but it’s still the best drill for ensuring you’re striking the ball from the center of the putter face. Place two T-pegs in the green, just a little wider than the width of your putter. First of all, that will ensure that you’re addressing from the center, often the cause of the off centered hits. Secondly, when you’re making strokes, it will be giving you feedback, if you’re striking the center of the putter face or not. It’s a really simple drill. You can use two T pegs when you’re on the practice putting green. Maybe when you are at home, you can use any two objects. I often use two sleeves of balls. Check out, the next time you’re watching Tiger Woods warming up at a tournament or on his practice rounds, this is a drill he’s being doing for years. It’s not a matter of just fixing your off centered hits, it’s a matter of maintaining it as well. So, even if you’re striking from the center of the putter face, this is something you should do on a weekly basis to make sure you maintain that aspect of your putting.
