Left Foot Stability Drill

Stop your left foot spinning out

Left Foot Stability Drill

Equipment:  1 Alignment Stick

Practice this drill with practice swings as well as shots.

What Can it Help Fix?

Hanging Back – Keeping the left foot stable in the downswing can have the effect of  improving weight transfer to the left side.

Heavy Shots – Poor weight transfer can lead to premature contact with the ground.

Thin Shots – Again, poor weight transfer can lead to striking up on the ball at impact, creating a thin shot.

High shots that lose distance –  It is important to transfer weight to the lead foot in the downswing in order to make solid contact with the ball; also, stability in the left foot will help transfer speed to the clubhead.

Swing Plane – Better weight transfer can improve the swing plane, resulting in increased accuracy.

Hi Robin here with another simple drill for anybody losing stability in their left foot in the downswing. What I mean by that is players whose left foot is spinning out of control even before they’ve reached impact. If it’s rolling, it’s spinning, hanging back on the right foot, left hip spinning back out of the way too early. The drill is simple as this. Place a stick in the ground, place the center of your left foot on the stick. You’ll feel the outside of your foot and the inside of your foot slightly off the ground. Try to maintain that through to impact. If you’re on grass, you can actually go ahead and hit some shots doing that once you’ve become comfortable with it.
