How To Hit A Draw

How To Draw A Golf Ball

Before you can learn to hit a draw, you will need to understand a few basic rules.  The first of these is that the clubface controls the starting direction of the shot. So for a draw, you will want the ball to start to the right side of the target.  This means the clubface must be aligned at impact to the right of your target.  It is the swing path (direction) in relation to the clubface which will determine the shape of the shot.  For a ball to move from right to left in the air, the clubface must be closed to the swing path, meaning that if the clubface is aligned right of the target, the swing path must be traveling more to the right.  Different players will achieve this in different ways, but if you have a reasonably neutral swing, one of the easiest ways is to adjust your set up.

– Start by aligning your clubface to where you want the ball to start – to the right side of your target.

– Then align your body further to the right, in the direction you want your swing path.

– The clubface should now be closed to your body line but still aimed right of your target.

– Try and make as normal as swing as possible, trusting the setup change, and that the ball will draw back.

So, you’d like to learn how to hit a draw shot. First of all you need to understand a few basic rules. Very importantly, it’s the club face which controls the starting direction of the shot. So, for a draw you’d want the ball to start a little bit to the right side of the pin or the right side of the fairway. At impact, the club face must be aligned to where you want the ball to start, a little bit to the right of your target. It’s the swing path which will control the shape of the shot. So, for a ball to move from right to left in the air, the swing direction, or your swing path, must be more to the right side than the club face. I put a few numbers in those to help you. Let’s say your club face is five degrees to the right of the target, your swing path must be ten degrees to the right of the target. This will produce a ball that starts to the right, and then draws back towards your target. How you get to these numbers doesn’t really matter. Many players will achieve these in different ways. But if I assume that you have a fairly neutral swing, one that’s on plane, with a reasonably square club face, the easiest way to achieve this at impact is by adjusting your setup. How I would hit a draw is at a setup, I’d align my club face to where I want the ball to start, a little bit to the right side of the pin in this case. And then I’d align my body more to the right than the club face, in the direction I want the swing. And then simply, if I maintain this throughout the swing, making my normal swing, the ball will start to the right and draw back towards the target.
