PUTTING FUNDAMENTAL 4
THE FUNDAMENTALS OF PUTTING
4: YOUR READ NEEDS A SPEED
-
For the ball to take the break you have read, you need to be able to control putter velocity.
-
One also needs to control the speed the ball enters the hole (the ideal capture speed).
-
To achieve the desired results, one needs to develop good rhythm to control the rate of acceleration and target speed.
-
We want to avoid rapid increases / decreases in velocity over time.
KEY POINTS
-
2:1 Ratio – Backswing should approx. take twice as long as the downswing to impact (Rhythm)
-
All strokes take the same time (timing) regardless of length E.G. small backswing and large backswing should produce the same time length of swing
-
The tempo is the quickness or slowness (timing) with which the movement is executed in sequence
-
Timing rhythm and swing length need to be considered together
-
Slow strokes need a longer backswing, while quicker strokes can require shorter backswings in order to maintain the 2:1 ratio
-
Slow and short or quick and long will struggle to achieve2:1 ratio (Good Rhythm)
-
Good stroke rhythm will help us control acceleration and velocity
