PUTTING FUNDAMENTAL 4

Title

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF PUTTING

4: YOUR READ NEEDS A SPEED

  • For the ball to take the break you have read, you need to be able to control putter velocity.

  • One also needs to control the speed the ball enters the hole (the ideal capture speed).

  • To achieve the desired results, one needs to develop good rhythm to control the rate of acceleration and target speed.

  • We want to avoid rapid increases / decreases in velocity over time.

KEY POINTS

  • 2:1 Ratio – Backswing should approx. take twice as long as the downswing to impact (Rhythm)

  • All strokes take the same time (timing) regardless of length E.G. small backswing and large backswing should produce the same time length of swing

  • The tempo is the quickness or slowness (timing) with which the movement is executed in sequence

  • Timing rhythm and swing length need to be considered together

  • Slow strokes need a longer backswing, while quicker strokes can require shorter backswings in order to maintain the 2:1 ratio

  • Slow and short or quick and long will struggle to achieve2:1 ratio (Good Rhythm)

  • Good stroke rhythm will help us control acceleration and velocity
