Correct Spine Angle at Address

Set your spine angle at address

In this video, I explain how the spine angle changes slightly as you change clubs.  The basic rule is that as the club gets longer you should tilt your spine more away from the target.  With your short irons, your spine should be set almost vertical.  With a mid iron around 10 degrees away from the target and a driver 10-15 degrees away from the target.  This spine angle will allow you to strike down on your short irons at impact, but with a driver you will be able to create an ascending strike, maximizing your distance.

Hi this is Robin Symes. I want to talk about spine angle. The angle your spine should be at address. The basic rule is the shorter the club, say the shortest club in your bag the sand wedge, your spine angle should be the closest it is to vertical. As the club gets longer, through to your driver, your spine angle will increase to the right. This is to help you create the right type of impact.

With your sand wedge, your looking to have a descending strike on the ball. With your driver, your looking to have an ascending strike on the ball. Giving you the best chance to optimize your distance. So with your sand wedge you’re going to start as close as you can to neutral. Through to your mid irons, you’re going to tilt yourself about 10 degrees to the right. Through to your driver you’ll be almost 10, 15 degrees to the right. So learn to adjust the spine angle to adjust the way you’ll be striking the ball at impact.
