Driver Address Position – 4 Key Points
How to set up to a driver
The driver is a unique club. It is the only club in your bag where you should be trying to hit up on the ball at impact. The general rule is the slower you swing, the more you will need to hit up to maximize your distance. You will need to make some changes at address from the rest of your clubs to achieve this upward blow:
1) Place the ball position towards your left heel.
2) Widen your stance so your feet are wider than your shoulders.
3) Angle your upper body 10-15 away from the target.
4) Allow your hands to sit behind the club head.

Hi my name is Robin Symes. I’d like to talk to you about the correct driver address position. The driver’s a very unique club. It’s the only club in your bag that you’ll be trying to hit slightly up on the ball. How much you want to hit up will be dependent upon your club head speed. The basic rule is the slower you swing, the more you need to hit up on the ball to maximize your distance.
To be able to achieve this upward blow you’ll need to make some adjustments from your normal address. Number one is we’re going to place the ball up towards our left heel. I suggest that you put a stick in the ground to give you some awareness of where the ball is relative to your left foot. So here I’m going to widen my stance. My feet should be wider than my shoulder width. Three, aligned on my upper body, 10-15 degrees away from the target, and four, I’ll actually allow my hands to sit behind the club head. My hands will fall in the middle of my body, and the club shaft will be angled away from the target. Hopefully from this position you can see it’s going to be relatively easy for me to stay there and hit slightly up on the ball.
So your four key points to the correct driver address position are: 1. ball position towards the left heel; 2. width of stance a little wider than normal; 3. angle your upper body away from the target; and 4. allow your hands to sit behind the club head.
