Long putting and controlling, your distance is a key to reducing your three putts. Very often, players blame the second putt missed on the three putt, but more often than not it’s because the first putt didn’t have the correct speed, control of distance. What we see with players who have got a great sense of distance is that in their routine, their eyes will be on the target more than on the ground or where the ball is positioned. They’ll be taking their practice strokes, looking at the target, developing a sense of the putt, and a tempo of the stroke that’s required. They’ll then align their putter face, once the putter face is aligned and their address is taken, they’ll take a longer look at the target than, say, players who’ve got a per sense of distance. Per putters from distance will have a short, fast look. Good, long putters will take a longer look, perhaps two seconds in length, then come back to the ball with no delay and strike the ball with some instinct.
