Golf Lesson – Takeaway Drill

Improve your moveaway

The takeaway is an aspect of the swing that sometimes gets forgotten about.  Many players are so caught up in trying to fix their backswing top, swing plane, or impact position that they forget about the importance of starting the swing correctly.

During this lesson, I focused on improving the moveaway by maintaining core stability.   I did this by using a drill to stabilize her core.  This promotes early separation between shoulders and hips.  It also helps the club, arms, shoulders, and hips all move in the correct sequence.

Core stability and early separation can help with many aspects of the swing:

– It can hep prevent your hips swaying, causing a reverse spine angle.

– Early separation will create a coil, helping create club head speed.

– Being able to separate is a key in being able to maintain posture during the backswing.

– Starting the swing correctly, in the correct sequence, encourages the correct transition sequence.

– Generally a more stable swing will help consistency, and increase accuracy.

Okay, good lesson here for anybody who struggles with lower body stability in the start of their swing. Especially core stability. You see this player here? She struggles to hold the middle of her body in position at the start of the swing. Her hips and her shoulders move together. Ideally really we want to see in a move away the upper body and the lower body separating early. So as she loses resistance here in her left thigh and her left hip she over rotated, it creates a little bit of a reverse tilt. And it creates a few complications in the downswing. But the key here is to improve the move away sequence.

One of my favorite drills for this is you’ll need an exercise band, a thermal band. Or just a simple piece of tubing. Attaching it on to something. But in doing this you’ll feel if you’re going to move away stretch this band with your upper body rotation. Hold in your lower body. You’ll really feel your core muscles engaging teaching you what needs to be engaged. What needs to be resisting in the move away. The challenge is it makes it more difficult but that’s the point. When you take away the band and you hold your golf club it will really feel a lot easier to get that correct move away. Upper body rotating before lower body. Good stability in your core and in your legs. If you are somebody who struggles with loss of posture, reverse tilting your upper body, perhaps a lateral sway, a back swing sway where your hips sway to the right then this would be a good exercise for you to try. For any more information on those faults visit my YouTube channel or my website SwingStation.com where you’ll see common faults and those I’ll explain more in detail about those faults and what causes them.
