Transition Step Drill

A Drill To Improve Your Downswing Transition

A great drill to develop your transition, ensuring that you’re starting your downswing with your lower body.  The lower body firing first is an essential aspect of an efficient swing.

  1. First, take your normal address.
  2. Before your start your backswing, take a step to the right with your right foot (right handed golfer).
  3. Now, start your backswing as normal, but before you reach the top of your backswing, step back to the left, planting your left foot into the ground.
  4. This will be your trigger to start the downswing.

Here’s an old drill that’s been around for quite some time to help players improve how they start their downswing, the transition. It ensures that you’re leading the movement with your lower body, the lower body is moving first. Take your address as normal, but before you start your backswing, take a step to the right with your left foot. Now, start your backswing as normal, but before the club head reaches the top of the swing, I want you to step back to the left. This will be ensuring that you’re separating your lower body and your upper body. You’ve got some weight transfer. As I said, the lower body is leading the movement. Let this be the trigger for the rest of your downswing. Let your shoulders, arms and club follow and hit the ball with speed. Try it off a tee pad at first, just to make it a little bit easier. I find that sometimes the old drills have gotten forgotten, but this certainly is a great drill to help you learn the transition to make sure your lower body is leading the movement.
