Stabilize Your Moveaway

A drill to help you start your swing correctly

Hi, Robin here. Got a great drill for anybody struggling, keeping their lower body stable in the moveaway.

What I’ll need you to do is pick up one of these Thera-Bands. These days you can get them pretty much at any super market, or online quite easily. Different colors for different tension levels.  Just match it to your strength level.

You’ll need to fix it something, maybe a golf cart, a wall with a post on it, or what I’ve done here, I’ve just put an alignment rod into the ground at an angle.

Once you’ve done that, what I want you to do is take your normal setup position, loading the band a little bit, just stretching the band out, so you’re now holding it in the same position as you would be holding your golf club.

You’ll already start to sense the difference, that load in the band is giving you a sense of the ground under your feet activating the muscles in your legs a little, activating your core muscles.

What I want you to do now in the moveaway is keep these muscles activated, keep them stable, as you make small moveaways to the right, just by rotating your chest to the right. You can probably hear this in my voice. This is more difficult than the regular moveaway with your golf club.  There’s a lot more load in the band. But it’s giving you an increased awareness of which muscles are activated, and how to use them to keep your lower body stable.

It’s one of these drills that you’ll probably have to try to really experience the benefits to it. But once you take your own golf club out, and make a few moveaways, you’ll feel a huge difference. It’ll be so much easier to keep these muscles activated, keep your lower body stable, and get your shoulders, arms and club moving early in the swing.

So, anybody struggling with that general lack of an unstable lower body, I think this is a great drill for you to try, so you might need to try it for you to really understand the benefits to you.

But give it a try, I think it’s one of those ones that can really help a lot of players out there.
