A lesson for advanced golfers
Hi, Robin here. One of the concepts I’ve talked about in the past is side bend and how your body is actually bending sidewards to the left in the backswing and then sidewards to the right in the downswing. And when you combine that with rotation, it allows you to move into the correct positions. It allows you to maintain your posture throughout the swing.
Now, I won’t go back into the details of that in this video. If this is the first video you’ve watched, and you want to try to understand what I mean by this, just simply search on my YouTube channel. And it’s “Side Bend – A Key to a Great Downswing”. I’ve got a good video on the subject and hopefully by watching that, you’ll fully understand what I mean by the terminology “side bend”.
Now, if you understand it, you feel like you need to improve this aspect of your swing, what I want you to understand is that sometimes side bend actually starts from the ground upwards. So in that last video, I talked about really how the upper body’s bending sidewards left and sidewards to the right, but actually the pelvis is also doing the same thing. So in the backswing, your right hip is getting higher than your left hip. So it’s bending sidewards to the left. In the downswing, your left hip’s getting higher than your right hip. It’s bending sidewards to the right. And this can start from the ground upwards. So if you’re struggling to get this into your swing, what I want you to try to feel is that in your backswing, you’re actually pushing up, you’re pushing away from the ground with your right foot. So you’re…it’s almost like you’re raising yourself off the ground with your right foot. Your pushing up, this raises your right hip, this helps the upper body, so the hips are bending sidewards to the left, this helps the upper body bend sidewards to the left. In the downswing, just the opposite. You’re pushing up off your left foot, you’re pushing away from the ground, helping the left hip get higher than the right hip, helping this sideward bend to the right coming down. This helps your right shoulder lower, helps your arms and club get on plane. So thing’s I’ve talked about in the video before.
So it’s really just a feeling. If you’re struggling incorporating this into your swing, push up off your right foot in the backswing, push up off your left foot in the downswing. You’re using the ground to try to help your body move, rotate, and bend sidewards to the left, sidewards to the right. Great feeling. There’s many benefits from using the ground correctly. Yes, what I’ve just explained, helping your body to move into the correct positions, but it also helps you create speed in the most efficient way. So give this feeling a try. As always, I hope it helps. And until next time, thanks for watching.
