Lob Shot From Rough

High Shot From Rough

One of the most difficult shots you can face when you have missed a green is when your ball is sitting down in rough, but you need a high soft landing shot.  Perhaps this is because the distance between the edge of the green is short, or the green slopes away from you and is fast.  Either way, it is difficult because the shot is short in length but yet you need some clubhead speed for the club head to cut through the rough.  If this is a shot you have struggled with, take a few mins to watch this video and learn a method for this shot.
The basics of the method are:

  • Open the clubface at address.
  • How much open will depend upon the severity of the lie.
  • Turn your hands to the left, a weaker position on the club.
  • Make an aggressive swing, maintaining the loft of the club.

So you’ve missed the green. The ball is sitting at the bottom of the grass, as you can see, you can’t even see the ball here. You are in a situation where the pin’s cut close to the edge of the green. Maybe the green’s downhill so you need a shot that is going to go up and down landing very soft on the green. Not very much run.

Now if you’re struggling to do this, try this tip. I want you to open the club face at address and then turn your hands to the left on the club. How much I want you to open the club face will depend upon the severity of the shot. The more severe the shot, the more you open the club face.

One of the biggest mistakes players make is they open the club face by turning their hands to the right. This puts your shoulders in a bad position and won’t allow you to maintain the loft of the club throughout the swing.

Turn the club face to the right, turn your hands to the left in a weaker position than you normally would for your regular shot. That will ensure that you can maintain the loft throughout the swing. Allowing you to make an aggressive swing, sending the ball up in the air, landing the ball soft on the green.

So, club face to the right, hands to the left in a weaker position than normal. Then trust that you can maintain the loft of the club throughout the shot making an aggressive swing.
