Check Your Eye Alignment

How changing your eye alignment can change your swing path

Hi, Robin here. Many players don’t realize the importance of the correct eye alignment at address. Your eye alignment will have a huge influence on the direction of your swing through the impact zone. But knowing where your eyes are aligned is very difficult without some form of feedback. So what I want you to do is take a mirror, placing it on the ground parallel to the target line. So when you set up with your head over the top of the mirror, you will now see very clearly where your eyes are aligned. Some players might see their eyes aligned to the right of the target at address. I would say with a high degree of certainty, you will have an in-to-out swing.  Your club head will be traveling to the right of the target through the impact zone. You might struggle with push shots and hook shots.

Other players will see that their eyes are aligned to the left of the target at address. You’re probably swinging out-to-in; club head is traveling to the left of the target at impact. You’re struggling with pull shots and slice shots. So now you got some form of feedback. It’s quite easy to practice with your eyes aligned, towards the target encouraging your club head, to travel towards the target. But you can also use this as a fix or a cure if you’ve got a slice or a hook. Let’s say you’re slicing.  When you’re setting up with your mirror, I actually want you to try to align your eyes a little bit to the right of the target. You’ll now develop a sense, a feeling that you can swing a little more to the right of the target. A more rightward swing is sure to help you reduce your slice. The opposite for people who are hitting hook shots.

Align your eyes a little to the left of the target.  Allow your club head to follow the alignment of your eyes, more to the left.  Again that’s sure to help you reduce your hook shot. So using the mirror is a great form of feedback.  Don’t underestimate the importance of aligning your eyes correctly at address. I believe it is one of the most important basic fundamentals in the address position.
